MGEN M40 demo: charging an EV with no charging station in sight

When Josh from EV Adventures Down Under asked to see the Alpine Energy MGEN M40 in action, there was only one way to demonstrate it: take it into the real world and charge an EV where there wasn't a charging station nearby.

It happened on one of Melbourne's coldest mornings of the year. Around 10°C, with rain coming and going, it was the sort of winter day most people would rather spend indoors. Instead, Mark was in a car park demonstrating how the MGEN M40 delivers DC fast charging wherever it's needed.

As a first-of-its-kind mobile DC fast charger, the MGEN M40 was built for situations where conventional charging infrastructure isn't available. Josh's own EV became the test vehicle, providing a practical demonstration of what mobile charging can offer.

How the demonstration worked

Josh arrived with a low battery, and Mark pulled the CCS2 cable from the storage drawer, extended the 10-metre lead, positioned the cable ramps for safety, and plugged the vehicle in.

After a quick tap of a payment card, charging began.

Within seconds, Josh's EV was drawing around 36kW. At that rate, around 15 minutes of charging can provide approximately 65 kilometres of driving range for a typical EV, often enough to reach the next town or the nearest charging station.

Throughout the session, charging data was available in real time. From inside the cab, away from the rain, they monitored the battery's state of charge, charging power, energy delivered and GPS location. Payments can be made by card or app, and a complete charging record is available via QR code or email, supported by 4G connectivity and cloud-based reporting.

Who's interested?

Interest in the MGEN M40 is growing across industries where mobility and resilience matter.

Roadside assistance providers see an opportunity to help EV drivers who have run out of charge, much as they already deliver fuel to stranded petrol vehicles. Tow operators can provide charging at the roadside before deciding whether a vehicle needs transporting.

Mining companies, utilities and emergency response organisations are also exploring how mobile charging could support operations when conventional charging infrastructure is unavailable. In fact, Mark received a call from a utility the day before filming to discuss exactly that scenario.

Built for real conditions

The demonstration took place entirely in wet winter weather, providing a genuine test of the system in outdoor conditions.

Despite the rain, the charging session ran safely from start to finish. The MGEN M40 is an intrinsically safe, patent-pending system developed using Alpine Energy's proprietary hardware and software, together with technology partner EXOR Oceania.

Looking beyond the charging network

Australia has made significant progress in expanding its EV charging infrastructure, but large parts of the country remain beyond easy reach of permanent fast chargers.

The MGEN M40 is designed to fill those gaps, bringing fast charging directly to drivers, worksites and emergency situations, wherever and whenever it is needed.
